Ashland Residence

The residence is located in Santa Monica, California on a site with a 1950’s modernist post-and-beam house. The two-story addition consists of a second floor master bedroom, closet and master bathroom, and a printing studio on the ground level. The master bedroom cantilevers five feet above, providing protection from the sun. Large sliding glass doors allow the studio to be well lit with natural light and provide a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor space. The rear yard and pool round out the design composition of the exterior spaces. The addition uses clues from the modernist post-and-beam architecture in developing its own set of compositional components including the concept of five-foot modulation. The existing building provides the backdrop for the new addition without compromising its original 1950’s character.
